Volcano Vista High School

Location: Albuquerque, NM

Completed: 2010

with SMPC Architects

The first new APS high school built since 1986, the design and construction of Volcano Vista were fast-tracked to alleviate pressure on the other high schools in the district. By collaborating with SMPC Architects on the design of the hardscape elements, MRWM was able to create a strong, coherent design vision for the school campus. The design re-uses volcanic boulders excavated from the site and uses a low-water, low-maintenance plant palette, appropriate to the volcanic escarpment. MRWM also designed the athletic fields, working closely with the APS athletic director to ensure that they were designed to each sport’s specific standards.
